Raising the BARN!

My brother, Josh, gathered all his friends (i.e. brothers and extended family members) and some other guys (sorry John and Luke) to help him put up a garage. This is not an ordinary two car garage; it’s a five car garage. This would be awesome if Josh was the type to use a garage for parking his vehicles, but if you know my brother Josh, you’d know that he wouldn’t waste that much space for protecting his vehicles. Instead, he would much rather have a place to park his heavy-duty 12” compound DeWalt miter saw and other heavy-duty tools that I’m not familiar with nor do I tend to list them here...

Most of the family started at 8:00 a.m., but since I’m the oldest and more mature I decided to give everyone a head start and arrive at a more fashionable time, 11:00 a.m. The plan was to put up all the walls and sheeting’s up before the sun set. Much to everyone surprise, not mine since I have never framed anything except that picture of myself that I bought for Liz’s birthday last year, we were able to not only frame the entire garage but put up the rafters and second floor.

To be very honest it was probably the hardest day that I’ve worked since I can’t remember. I had a great time working together with friends and family. There seemed to be a sense of nostalgia in the air; remembrance of those days when Dad had us all clean out the garage or even further back when we added the room on to our house next to the office (I was 9). Good times were had by all.

Josh says that the fun has only begun. But to be honest I hoped that the fun was done Saturday. He says that the roof has to be put on, siding, dry-wall and many other miscellaneous open-ended projects before the garage can be christened. No worries though Josh has promised to build something for everyone that has helped out. Josh my wife and would like new cupboards and if you can ‘whip’ that out quickly go ahead re-model our bathroom (just kidding).

Seriously, the Lord has truly blessed our family. Our parents raised us with the ability to work together, work hard and to work right. And with these abilities I pray that we can reach many for the cause of Christ.

Interesting facts that you may not be aware of:
- One cannot purchase a ‘plus’ or ‘minus’ screw driver from your local hardware store.
- ‘Flat-head’ screwdriver is the correct technical and lay name for a ‘minus’ screwdriver
- ‘Philips-head’ screwdriver is the correct technical and lay name for ‘plus’ screwdriver.
- A ‘shoe-horse’ is not the proper term for ‘toe-nailing’ two pieces of wood together.
- ‘Squaring’ a wall can also be done on a rectangle wall.
- Once a nail has been bent, Josh doesn’t want them anymore.

Take a look at what Jacob is doing; this is pretty much what he did all day ;)

That's one HUGE "garage". I'm not sorry I missed all the hard work, but I am sorry I missed working with you guys.

I was hoping you all would be clad in black and would be humming 'amish paradise.' But then I remembered you were all polish and probably not mennonite.

Very funny!!! Thanks for all of your hard work. If I have any scraps left, I will get right on those cabinets or better yet you can come on over and show Liz how talented you really are by building your own cabinets. By the way those things you are calling "rafters" are really called joists, but if you would really want to install a rafter or two, we are working this Friday. Thanks again.
